You’ve seen the botched celebrity liposuction photos floating around the internet and it leads many to ask, how does this happen? I sat down with Dr. Adams today and asked him a few questions about liposuction. How does he consistently have excellent liposuction results? Much of his success comes down to two things: patient selection and technique.
Q: Dr. Adams, your before and after photos for liposuction are flawless. How do you get such great results?
A: Great liposuction results come down to two things: patient selection and surgical technique. I think it’s important to understand that not everyone is a candidate for liposuction. This is why the initial consultation is so important. Many times bad results can be avoided by carefully examining a patient and making sure they are a candidate for the surgery. Age can also be a factor – the older you are, the more risk there is associated with the surgery.
Great liposuction results also come down to surgical technique. How the doctor removes the fat and utilizes the suctioning power of the machine is very important. When removing layers of fat, I always leave one layer of fat beneath the skin which gives the result a more natural appearance.
Q: Do you recommend that patients massage the areas where liposuction was performed during recovery?
A: Actually, no. Although some surgeons recommend this, I do not. For the first 5 days following liposuction, the area is quite tender and feels bruised. The skin will naturally adjust and massage can in fact cause more swelling. In my opinion massage does nothing beneficial for the results and can sometimes prevent the area from healing properly.
Q: Are some areas of the body better suited to liposuction than others?
Yes. The area under the neck tends to have great results with liposuction. There are seldom irregularities here. Again, every patient is different and it is extremely important to carefully examine the patient during their consultation to make sure he/she is an appropriate candidate.
Q: Is liposuction a treatment for cellulite?
No and this is a very important point I make to patients during their consultation. There are lasers out there that will help reduce the appearance of cellulite but liposuction will not help with the appearance of cellulite. We offer a non-invasive procedure performed by our skin care specialists Cathy and Rose that is called SmoothShapes. Through a series of 6-8 treatments, SmoothShapes can reduce the appearance of cellulite.
