Dark circles under the eyes are an issue for many people — sometimes even after a blepharoplasty.

Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a number of factors. They are often caused by a small ligament called the arcus marginalis that underlines the dark circle. As the lower eyelid ages and becomes lax, the fat supporting the eyeball begins to push out against the lax lid, the lower eyelid skin begins to fall or sag down towards the cheek.

The eyelid skin of the dark circle is thinner, which adds to the depression that is created, and makes the shadow in the dark circle darker and more noticeable.

To correct dark circles under the eyes, we perform a procedure to release the arcus marginalis either as a separate procedure, or as part of our Total Eyelid Rejuvenation program.

To soften the appearance of the dark circle, either fat or a tear trough implant may be placed beneath the dark circle to plump up the area.
