Silicone breast implants and breast augmentation have come a long way since their introduction into clinical use fifty years ago. The development of better technology and improved medical devices has given plastic surgeons even more of an understanding of how to minimize the risks of breast augmentation.
For 14 years silicone breast implants were banned by the Food and Drug Administration until clinical research demonstrated that silicone implants were indeed safe. Plastic surgeons were a catalyst for evidence and quality based research in the field. Silicone implants were reintroduced in 2006 after clinical research demonstrated the science and safety of the implants.
I find it fascinating to look at how far the field of cosmetic surgery has come. The development of new devices and technology has enabled plastic surgeons to give patients better results while minimizing risk.
As we look to the future, it’s important for developers of medical devices and plastic surgeons to work together to ensure only Board Certified plastic surgeons are performing cosmetic surgery in accredited surgical facilities.
If you are considering breast augmentation, the most important thing is to find a qualified board certified plastic surgeon who can show you before and after pictures of his results. Please call me at (617)262-2208 or contact my office if you have any questions.
