Rhinoplasty Q&A with Dr. Adams: Boston’s Nose Expert

February 25th, 2014

Rhinoplasty is one of my favorite surgical procedures to perform.  Here are some frequently asked questions patients commonly ask.  Always keep in mind it is best to come into the office for a consultation rather than doing the majority of your research on the internet, as there are many unreliable internet sources and misleading information available.

How should I clean my nose following a rhinoplasty?

There is no reason to clean the nose after a rhinoplasty procedure.  The nose will naturally clean itself.  After two weeks, you can gently blow your nose.  I will provide patients with more details following their procedure.

Will my nose feel dry after my rhinoplasty?

Some patients may experience dryness following their rhinoplasty.

Will I experience swelling after my rhinoplasty?

Yes you will experience swelling after your surgery but it should disappear within two weeks.

Will I have scabbing inside the nose?

Yes you will have scabbing inside the nose and you should do nothing about it.  We will provide you with further directions during your pre-op appointment.

What is a bulbous tip?  Can a rhinoplasty correct this?

A bulbous tip is when the tips of the nose is fuller than the rest of the nose.  To fix a bulbous tip, I reshape the cartilage inside the nose.

Can you correct flared nostrils with a rhinoplasty?

Yes flared nostrils can be corrected with a rhinoplasty.

Will I have scarring after my rhinoplasty surgery?

In an open rhinoplasty, there will be a small scar on the bottom of the nose, however it is very hard to detect.  When I correct flared nostrils, the scar is hidden in the side crease of the nose and is also very hard to detect.
