What Does the "New Age of Cosmetic Surgery" Mean for You?

Recently, Newsweek Magazine ran a cover story, and CNN aired a segment examining the choices, trends, and risks associated with plastic surgery. As I've said before, there are many more choices for you to consider. With these choices, however, come risks, and responsibility on my part to do what is in your best interests. That is why I believe it is extremely important for you to be well educated about the services we provide and the procedures we perform. This is also the reason I've chosen to specialize in aesthetic surgery and continue to attend advanced training courses every year.

At The Adams-Seckel Center, we offer a full range of both aesthetic services and surgical enhancements, and we take a very personalized approach to your care. Surgery is not for everyone. It has always been my goal to establish realistic expectations while keeping safety as our primary concern. Keeping this in mind, less is often more. In the case of liposuction, for example I'd rather remove less fat than risk the health of my patients.

Your overall health and well being is what is most important, and at The Adams-Seckel Center, we never lose sight of this.

Who Determines Beauty?

A Better Solution for Unwanted Hair

Understanding Permanent Hair Reduction

Permanent hair reduction is defined as the "long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after a treatment regime." The LightSheer Diode Laser most effectively disables hair in its active growth stage. Since hair has three distinct growth phases, more than one treatment is usually necessary.

For the first time, the FDA granted clearance to the LightSheer Diode Laser System, a new generation of diode laser technology, to claim that it achieves permanent hair reduction. This is significant, because we have been looking for a more reliable, comfortable method of hair removal.

Another breakthrough of this technology is its effectiveness at treating all skin types. The laser has a cooling tip that protects skin while the laser beam targets the dark pigment within each hair follicle. It is delicate enough for sensitive skin, but powerful enough to remove dark, coarse hair.

For maximum effectiveness, patients should avoid the sun for at least 6 weeks before treatment. This is so the dark melanin within each hair follicle is clearly visible. If you have a darker skin type, we prescribe a 4% Hydroquinone cream to apply to the area for treatment.
Treatments can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. The length of time depends upon the size of the area being treated.

New Anatomical Breast Implants Create a More Natural Shape

Techniques to Reduce the Appearance of Surgical Scars

It makes sense that incisions cause scarring. But, by making incisions in the crease under the breast, around the nipple, or through the armpit, they become much less noticeable.

So how long does it take to get back to "normal" after surgery? Typically, your breasts may be tender for two to three weeks. It depends on each case how long of a recovery period you should expect before resuming exercise and other activities.

Breast augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty) is one of the most popular elective surgeries. Many women choose this procedure to balance a difference in breast size, after childbirth, or to enhance their body contour. The newest anatomical implants are designed to resemble the natural, sloped shape of a woman's breast. As a result, you can have a more voluptuous appearance that complements your unique shape and body type without the obvious roundness often associated with plastic surgery.

How Does it Work?
These newer implants require more careful, personalized planning and surgical positioning.

A pocket for the implant is created by maneuvering and lifting tissue and skin behind the breast tissue or directly behind the pectoral muscle. The implants are then inserted, positioned and centered.

Other Options
Depending on the condition of your breasts, skin tone and desired effect, you may also elect to have a breast lift (Mastopexy). In plain terms, the lift corrects sagging, whereas the augmentation procedure only increases size.

Let us know if you would like to schedule a consultation to discuss the options available to you.

Questions and Answers:

Q: What happens at a consultation with Dr. Adams?
A: Whether it is an aesthetic or surgical consultation, we discuss your expectations for the area or features you would like to enhance. Based on your overall health, as well as the condition and skin tone of the area, we explain which techniques or services may be most appropriate for you. At this time, we also discuss potential risks, limitations, pretreatment preparation, and post-treatment care.

Q: What is the most common problem women experience with breast implants?
A: Occasionally, scar tissue around the implant can tighten, causing the breast to feel hard. If this happens, we can either release the scar tissue or replace the implant.

Q: What happens if the breast implant leaks?
A: Sometimes the implants may leak and deflate. Because we use implants filled with a saline solution, the body simply and harmlessly absorbs the liquid. If this does happen, you may choose to have the implant replaced to correct the problem. This is a major improvement over the older gel-filled implants that you have heard so much about. If a silicone implant leaks, it is not always possible to remove all of the silicone gel from surrounding breast tissue.
