Breast Implants Receive FDA Approval |
 |
|
In our June newsletter, I mentioned that a U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) advisory panel had given conditional approval for Mentor Corporation's
Memory Gel (silicone gel filled) breast implants. In July of this year,
the full FDA voted to approve Mentor's implants, and in September of
this year, they gave a similar approval to Inamed Corporation's silicone
gel implants.
With over 334,000 breast augmentations performed each year, this is
good news for women who choose to enhance their appearance through
a breast augmentation.
Many view a breast augmentation as simply a matter of size. However,
the procedure has also helped thousands of women correct issues of
symmetry between breasts, and general shape of the individual breasts.
Today's silicone gel implants are designed not only to provide a more
realistic look and feel, but also to be stronger than in the past.
Having been involved in the clinical trials of silicone breast implants,
I've found that patients prefer silicone over saline implants, and
I will begin offering these as an option to my patients.
If you have any questions regarding cohesive silicone gel breast implants,
or breast enhancement, please call my office at 617-262-2208 for assistance.

3D Imaging to Visualize the New You |
 |
We recently acquired a new 3D imaging machine.
The beauty of 3D imaging is that it allows us to look at a patient's
face from all angles - both as it is, and how it can be. This can
give both the patient and me the opportunity to better fine tune
a prospective operation from a number of angles before performing
surgery.
3D imaging will be beneficial for a wide variety of surgeries, but
especially for breast augmentation and rhinoplasty patients.
Contact me for more information on the potential benefits of using
3D imaging in your surgical procedure.

Your Glutes, Create More Endurance, and Lose Weight Over the Holidays |
 |
Did you know that the average American gains 10 pounds over the holidays?
Making the time for just two high intensity workouts a week through
this crazy time of the year can help you 1) avoid gaining that 10
pounds, 2) help you actually LOSE weight, 3) make endurance gains,
and 4) help tone and shape your butt.
One of the great things about many people's favorite cardio exercises,
is that they also work the glutes. Supplementing the cardio program
with weight lifting exercises that work the large muscle groups of
the legs and buttocks will really help to step up your results.
This routine is all about speed! Start off with a 20 minute cardio
routine (see samples), and quickly transition to the weight training
portion of the program. You'll also need to quickly transition between
the weight training sets, and exercises to keep the calorie burning
furnace stoked. Remember, exercising in the morning - before eating
- is the best time to burn the maximum amount of fat (see our article
on Diet and Weight Loss). Allow 2 days of rest between workouts.
Beginners should consult with their physician prior to starting any
exercise program. If you've never lifted weights, contact
us to schedule
an appointment with one of our trainers and to develop a personalized
exercise program.

Over my 25+ years in practice, I've received thousands of questions
from patients. While many of the questions are situation specific,
these are some of the more common:
Q:How long do the effects from Microfat
Injections last?
A:The results from Microfat Injections (and Botox, Restylane, etc.)
will vary from person to person. However, Microfat tends to last for
6 months or longer in about 50% of patients. Botox and Restylane results
also last for about 6 months.
Q:I'm considering Blepharoplasty. How long would I have to be out of
work?
A:Blepharoplasty is a great technique for reducing the sagging of either
the upper or lower eyelids. Due to the bruising and swelling that can
occur from this type of surgery, I recommend patients take approximately
10 days off from work.

I hope all of you had a nice Thanksgiving!
I was recently reviewing some current articles on new trends in facial
rejuvenation.
Judging from the number of e-mails I receive on the topic, I know many
of you read similar material, or see news stories on these items.
While there have been many bona fide advances in the area of facial
rejuvenation such as minimally invasive injectables, laser treatments,
and several mini- facelift techniques, there are other techniques that
produce limited results such as Thermage, thread lifts, and several
of the creams and lotions that are touted as miracle cures for wrinkles.
One of the principles of my practice is that I will answer any of my
patients' questions honestly and try to give all of the pros and cons
of a procedure. So, keep the e-mails coming! If you see a news story
on a particular topic that you're curious about, let me know and I
can address it either in e-mail, or in this newsletter.
Best regards,
William P. Adams, M.D., F.A.C.S.
