With 8.3 million cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S.
last year, people are choosing to manage the signs of aging
and enhance their appearance more often than ever.
Recently, the American Society Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
released 2003 statistics for cosmetic procedures, which showed:
- Surgical procedures increased by 12%
- Non-surgical procedures increased 22%
- Women had 87% of all procedures - an increase of 16% from
2002
- Men had 13% of all procedures - a 22% increase in surgical
and 34% increase in non-surgical procedures
- People between the ages of 35-50 accounted for
45% of all procedures
- Those 19-34 had 20% of all procedures
- 52% were performed in an office facility
The top five surgical procedures were Liposuction, Breast
Augmentation, Eyelid
Surgery, Nose
Resculpturing (Rhinoplasty), and Female
Breast Reduction.
The top non-surgical procedures were Botox
Treatments, Laser
Hair Removal, Microdermabrasion, Chemical

& A |

In my 25 years in practice, I've received thousands of questions
from patients. While many of the questions are specific to
a patient, below are some of the more general.
Q: Spider Veins - I have tiny veins that show in parts
of my legs. Is there any way to get rid of these before bathing
suit season?
A: Spider veins occur in men and women. They can be
hereditary, occur after puberty, an accident, pregnancy, or
other causes. We offer a procedure called Sclerotherapy that will get rid of these veins in most
cases.
Q: Cellulite - No matter how hard I exercise, I still
have cellulite on my thighs and butt. I've tried creams. I've
tried pills. What can I do?
A: Creams and pills don't work. Diet and exercise
may not improve cellulite either. If you've followed a diet
and exercise program for 6 months or more that includes a
routine for legs (see tips below) and aren't seeing results,
you may have done all you can do. Our Synergie program is effective in some cases.
Q: Breast Augmentation - Are there any known links
between breast implants and autoimmune diseases, or lung and
brain cancers?
A: There is no known correlation between breast
implants and cancers or autoimmune diseases.

Hylaform is part of a new class of injectable soft
tissue fillers (used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around
the nose and mouth) based on hyaluronic acid.
Hylaform gel is a biodegradable, purified hyaluronic acid
- a naturally occurring substance that provides volume and
fullness to the skin. This substance fills the space between
collagen and elastin fibers to replenish the natural loss
of hyaluronic acid that occurs during aging.
Once injected, Hylaform binds to water molecules in and under
the skin to maintain volume and create a longer lasting effect.
Since it's biodegradable, it gradually disappears without
residue.
Hylaform has been in use in approx. 40 countries throughout
the world for almost a decade, but is new to the U.S. market.
The FDA approved the product on April 23.
While I have not begun using this product, tests show that
the effects should be immediately noticeable and last for
6 months or more (similar to Restylane - in use since January 2004).

Perform 3 sets of all exercises, alternating between them.
Follow these general guidelines:
Set 1 - Warm-up: 10 - 15 reps using light weight
Set 2 - Getting harder: 8 - 10 reps using moderately heavy
weight
Set 3 - Heavy: 5 - 8 reps of a challenging weight. Do
not perform to failure.
Beginners should consult with their physician prior to starting
any exercise program. If you've never lifted weights, you
may want to consult with a personal

| YMCA's
"Y it's Time" Campaign |
 |
|
For many years now, my wife Carol and I have been involved with
the Marblehead-Swampscott YMCA.
The work done by the YMCA is outstanding. Each week, they serve
over 2,000 people from infants to seniors with important programs
designed to strengthen family bonds.
Recently Carol and I, along with co-chairs Peter & Carolyn Lynch,
Eyk & Rose-Marie Van Otterloo, and other committee members have
helped the Y raise funds to purchase new land and build a larger
facility. The new 60,000 sq ft building will be almost four times
larger than the current 16,000 sq ft (one of the area's smallest)
facility that it's occupied since 1910.
The campaign, known as "Y it's Time," has helped to raise $4.5
million of it's $8 million goal, and will allow the Y to offer
much needed services to the area.
Thank you to those of you who have supported this effort!
