  • Are Silicone Gel Implants Back?
    .

In October of this year a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended that silicone gel filled breast implants be permitted for use in breast augmentation and reconstruction.

The panel recommended silicone gel implants for "approval with conditions" by a 9 to 6 vote. Among the conditions of approval were the development of patient education media, a professional training program, and a patient registry.

If the FDA agrees with the panel's recommendations, silicone gel implants will once again be available. Over the past 11 years, use of silicone gel implants have been restricted to clinical studies due to concerns over potential side effects caused from leaking silicone implants.

Once the FDA has officially approved the use of silicone implants, I will begin offering them as an option to patients.

If you have any questions regarding breast implants, please call my office at 617-262-2208 for assistance.

    Q & A
    .

Over my 25 years in practice, I've received thousands of questions from patients. While many of the questions are situation specific, these are some of the more common:

Q:What is the average recovery time following a cosmetic procedure?

A:Recovery times vary widely depending on the procedure. Recovery can range from a day (for most non-surgical procedures) or less, up to a few weeks. Patients recover from most surgical procedures within a week to 10 days.

Q:Is there an effective treatment for stretch marks?

A:Unfortunately, there are currently no great treatments for stretch marks. Hopefully, an effective treatment can be developed in the next few years.

Q:Are there any alternatives to Botox¨ for non-surgical wrinkle reduction?

A: Botox¨ is currently one of the most effective FDA approved treatments for reducing facial wrinkles. Other good alternatives include collagen and microfat.

Additionally, there are a several new potential treatments that are pending FDA approval: Myobloc, Dysport¨, Restylane, Perlane, Hylaform¨, Artecoll¨, and Radiance. I have not used these new treatments, so I have no first hand knowledge of their effectiveness.
