LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST
Facing the New Millennium

Dr. William P. Adams, M. D. , F. A. C. S.
Director of The Adams-Seckel Center

As promised, this issue is dedicated to treatments and procedures that can enhance your facial features. The face is obviously a very important feature in a person's overall appearance. There has always been a lot of emphasis on the face as a measure of attractiveness.

People ask me all the time what I would recommend to improve their appearance. First of all, it isn't important what I think, but what makes you feel comfortable and confident. For some people, that might mean that they've always wished their nose or chin was just a little different - or that a scar was less noticeable.

We are all getting older. Maybe you're concerned about what you see as dark circles under your eyes, or you've noticed wrinkles that weren't there before. Or maybe you're curious about what kind of difference a facelift might make. If you are a man, maybe you'd like to do something about your receding hairline.

Nobody is perfect, but there are a lot of options for you to consider if you're interested in enhancing your appearance. As always, The Adams-Seckel Center is committed to providing you with the information you need to make educated decisions.

Walter's Success Story
SMALL ADJUSTMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

The aesthetic plane goes from the top of the nose through the lower lip to the chin. To achieve a balanced look, this plane should be in a straight line. Little corrections in the alignment of the aesthetic plane can help to add definition to a person's neck, chin, jaw, mouth, nose, cheeks, and eyes. The result can be a more youthful and fit appearance.

For years, I had been embarrassed by the excessive amount of hair I had developed on my back and shoulders. I can't tell you the amount of times I cringed as I heard a joke about men with back hair. It took some time for me to get up the guts to have laser hair removal. I was most concerned about being embarrassed with the persons or person I bared my all to.

I called around, asked friends, searched the local magazines and newspapers and set up three appointments with Boston area providers of laser hair removal. I attacked this process, much like I do many decisions. I wanted to know as much as possible about the process, the cost, the risks, the efficiency, and most importantly, the skills and personality of the provider.

After visiting three facilities and interviewing three providers, I decided on The Adams-Seckel Center. On all accounts, The Adams-Seckel Center was by far the best choice. Immediately upon meeting Nancy, the laser technician, I felt very much at ease. I never felt the least embarrassed with her. She was professional, kind and skilled. She answered all my questions and even put me in touch with ways to get more information about my options.

After my first treatment I saw dramatic improvement. I was initially concerned about what my body would look like right after the treatment. The evening of the treatment, my back and shoulders felt a bit like I had a sunburn. I was aware that I had the treatment, but barely. By the second day, the only visible sign that I had the treatment was the lack of hair. My confidence got quite a boost, both in and out of the gym. About 20% grew back in the next 10 weeks or so. Last week I went back for my second appointment. Having hair laser removal was one of the best decisions I have made. Having it done at The Adams-Seckel Center was another.

Of all the facilities I investigated, I found The Adams-Seckel Center to be the least expensive, to have the newest in technology and by far the most skilled and kind staff available in the Boston area. I would recommend laser hair removal and The Adams-Seckel Center to anyone who, like me, felt self-conscious about excessive body hair.

Setting Back the Clock
LASER TREATMENTS FOR WRINKLES

It is possible to achieve a more youthful appearance through laser resurfacing. Today's lasers are precise enough to treat areas near the eyes and around the mouth. Very fine, vertical creases around the upper lip, sometimes referred to as lipstick lines, is a good example of an area commonly treated with laser resurfacing. Areas that have undergone laser resurfacing tend to be noticeably smoother within about five weeks.

You can't stop the aging process. You can, however, slow it down. There are some surgical procedures that can dramatically reduce telltale signs. Men and women whose face and neck have begun to sag sometimes opt for a facelift. Also called rhytidectomy, this procedure can improve your appearance by removing excess fat around the neck and chin, tightening deep tissues, and redraping the skin.

Facelifts vary depending on your individual bone structure and skin. Typically, the best results occur in patients that have well-defined features and skin elasticity. Other procedures that are sometimes combined with facelifts include forehead lifts, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping, and facial implants.

A forehead lift is performed if you have a sagging brow or frown lines. This procedure smoothes the brow by re-draping the skin.

Eyelid surgery doesn't get rid of dark circles or crow's feet, but it does help droopy lids and bags below the eyes. For the lower eyelids, a cheek lift repositions the cheek pad and smoothes out the tear trough that goes from the inner eye out beneath the eye. This area can also be improved with a cheek implant. As with all plastic surgery, the incisions are made along your natural lines so that the scars are nearly invisible.

There are, of course some potential risks that you need to know about if you are considering any kind of plastic surgery. Please call The Adams-Seckel Center if you would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Adams.

Reshaping Your Nose
One of the most common procedures in plastic surgery is rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, shape the bridge or tip, or narrow the span of your nostrils. It can also change the angle between your nose and upper lip. It's important, however, to establish expectations upfront, and computer imaging is good for showing potential results.

How Does it Work?
The procedure usually takes an hour or two, although complicated procedures may take longer. Your nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, and then shaped based on our discussion during your consultation. Then, the skin is redraped over the new framework.

When rhinoplasty is performed from within the nose, the incision is made inside the nostrils. An "open" procedure involves making an incision across the columella, the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils. A splint is applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. When rhinoplasty is performed from inside the nose there is no visible scarring at all. If your procedure was for the narrowing of flared nostrils, or an "open" technique is used, the small scars on the base of the nose are usually not visible.

Following surgery, you can expect to be up and about within a couple of days and back to sedentary work within a week or so. Bruising and swelling is normal, but within a week or two the casual observer will have no idea that you just had surgery.
