More Men than Ever Realizing the Benefits of Cosmetic Medicine

Boston, MA, March 21, 2003–One of the most interesting and unexpected trends in the field of cosmetic medicine is the growth in the number of men who are realizing the benefits of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Since 1997, the number of cosmetic procedures being performed has risen for both men and women. However, the number of men deciding to enhance their appearance through either surgery or a non-surgical procedure, such as Botox®, has in many cases outpaced women.

Dr. William P. Adams, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board certified, Boston area cosmetic surgeon, and Director of The Adams-Seckel Center, says; “For some of the procedures we perform, almost 50% of our patients are men. Ear surgeries, for example, have been 50% men for the last two years, liposuction is 30% to 35%, and nose resculpturing is 30%.”

Recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) echo Dr. Adams. From 1997 to 2002, the number of men having surgical cosmetic procedures increased by a staggering 790% (women have increased 148%), and the number of non-surgical procedures increased by 554% (352% for women).

With all the press coverage Botox® has received, it’s no surprise that injections topped the list with a 4,334% increase in males (2,279% for women). “In the last four or five years, we’ve seen more variations in the types of procedures male patients are getting”; said Adams. “Men really started with hair transplants and rhinoplasties [nose jobs]. Now they’re having liposuction (up 99% nationally since 1997), facelifts and eyelid surgeries (up 55% since 1997).”

ASAPS statistics point to large increases in Buttock Lifts (460% since 1997), Tummy Tucks (183%), Upper Arm Lift (790%), Thigh Lifts (295%), and Lower Body Lifts (178%). “Men are more concerned with their appearance and how it’s affected by the aging process. Guys have been working out for decades to improve how they look, but there used to be a stigma attached to men having cosmetic surgery. Now, that’s disappeared” Adams says.
