Build A Stronger Core - July 18, 2011
The muscles of your back and abdominal region take a lot of abuse throughout the day. Walking, bending, lifting, and even sitting can put strain on your core.
A lack of good core strength, can lead to lower back pain, injury, and poor posture just to name a few. If you play sports, your core muscles are critical to good performance. People tend to look at the muscles of the back and abdomen as separate areas. In reality, the two groups are interconnected. You must train both areas, or you can throw off your body’s alignment.
The back is prone to injury, so be sure not to over train. Limit the number of training sessions to about 3 per week (30 minutes each) with a day of rest in between. Beginners, start by alternating 2 back training sessions per week with 2 days rest.

Beginners should consult with their physician prior to starting any exercise program. If you’ve never lifted weights, you may want to consult with a personal trainer for one on one instruction and to develop a personalized exercise program.
Shape Up Your Arms - July 12, 2011
Arms are one of the most exposed areas of your body.
Tank tops, t-shirts, and sun dresses in the summer, or sleeveless dresses for holiday parties can either show off one of your best assets, or highlight an area that needs work (most people are in this category).
Whether you’re going sleeveless for the holidays, or just want to tone your arms, these exercises can help add balance and proportion in as little as one hour a week (3 sessions of 20 minutes each).
Biceps
Triceps
Perform 3 sets of all exercises, alternating between biceps and triceps exercises. Follow these general guidelines:
- Set 1 – Warm-up: 10-12 reps using light weight
- Set 2 – Getting harder: 6-8 reps using moderately heavy weight
- Set 3 – Heavy: 3 or 4 reps of a challenging weight. Perform set to failure.
Beginners should consult with their physician prior to starting any exercise program. If you’ve never lifted weights, you may want to consult with a personal trainer for one on one instruction and to develop a personalized exercise program.
Improve Your Lung Capacity - June 29, 2011
Did you know that our lung capacity decreases as we age?
After age 20 lung capacity decreases by about .5% – 1% of capacity per year primarily due to a decrease in the elasticity of the lung tissue. The old adage use it or lose it is especially true when it comes to our lungs.
Normal adult lung capacity is 3 to 5 liters (3,000 – 5,000 milliliters), and can be calculated as milliliters of air per kilogram (approx. 2.2 lbs.) of body weight. The equation for women is 50 to 60 milliliters of air for each kilogram of body weight (55 ml x kg), and for men the equation is 70 milliliters per kilogram of body weight (70 ml x kg).
This is all somewhat grim news. The good news is that physical fitness increases lung capacity. This makes adding a minimuim of 30 minutes a day of enjoyable aerobic exercise (running, swimming, rowing, cycling, or even a brisk walk) a critical component to any exercise regimen. Aerobic exercise will not only help to increase your lung capacity, but it will also burn fat, increase your metabolism, help decrease blood pressure, slow bone and muscle loss, and aid in your overall health and wellness.
10 Power Tips To Stay Forever Young - June 14, 2011
Some tips from us at the Adams Center to keep you looking forever young!
Breathe
Exhaling relieves stress, clears the lungs, increases mental focus and contracts the abdomen. You can actually tone the belly by learning to breathe properly.
Drink in Excess
Water rinses cell wastes, blood poisons and environmental toxins from the body. Try flat mineral water, or organic herbal teas. For an electrolyte boost, try wheat grass juice.
Eat Well
Try eating 5 small (but balanced) meals a day to keep your metabolic fire stoked:
- Eat a light breakfast — Try a protein smoothie, a handful of soaked almonds, and fruit
- Lunchtime is when our digestive fire is at its peak. This can be a heavier meal
- Dinner should be light, with few carbohydrates — i.e. sugar, bread, etc.
Eat Fat
Unlike “bad-fats” (found in processed foods) fats in avocados and other vegetables, are good sources of phyto-nutrients, and essential fatty acids, which protect against heart disease and cancer. Try evening primrose oil, fish oils, or flax seed oil.
Calcium is Important for More than Just Strong Bones
Take calcium with magnesium in a 1 to 1 ratio daily. Adding 500 — 3,000 mgs of ester C with rose hips promotes absorption, and repairs cell damage. Also, adding magnesium can assist you in falling asleep and waking refreshed.
Loosen your Shoulders, Free your Hips, Stand on your Head
3 stretches in 3 minutes can help eliminate postural imbalances:
- Serenity Pose
- Standing Forward Bend
- Beginners head stand (Dolphin Pose or Half-Dog Pose)
Stop Over-Exercising
Seek a moderately challenging routine:
- 30% strength
- 30% aerobic (low to medium impact)
- 30% stretching
- 10% relaxation
Allow for sufficient rest between workouts to help the body recuperate
Stop Over-Exfoliating
Peeling, burning, and abrading the skin refines its appearance, but it can also weaken the skin’s immunity. Too much exfoliating can eventually kill skin cells. Ask your skin care professional for gentle peels, and feed facial skin with live cell extracts, and essential oils.
The Power of Minerals
A proper diet, including minerals, strengthens a cell’s ability to fight cancer, viruses and bacteria. Consider taking liquid minerals daily if needed.
Sugar is Toxic
1 tsp of refined white sugar can destroy all of the vitamin B12 you ingest in a week. Without B12, the myelin sheath (which protects nerve endings) starts to erode. Consider adding a B complex vitamin to your daily vitamin and mineral regimen.
Life Offers Opportunities At Every Stage - June 8, 2011
This past weekend I attended my son’s college graduation in Denver, Colorado from the University of Denver’s School of Business. There are certain events in life that mark a transition from one stage of life into another – forcing us to look critically at where we stand now and at the direction in which we are heading.
Graduations are one such of these occasions. It has been 44 years since I graduated from Dartmouth College in the spring of 1967. Sitting in the audience I was reminded of how much possibility and opportunity we see in our younger years. ”Rules for the Long Road” was the theme of the commencement speech delivered by former Cisco president John Mordgridge, and it succeeded in including every generation present. However, the most memorable point he made that I took away with me and that I would like to share with you is this. Life offers opportunities at every stage of life.
“I long had a goal of becoming president of a company.” Morgridge said, “But it was not till I was 57 years old that I became president of Cisco Systems with its 34 employees. Life offers opportunity at every stage.”
As we get older, it’s easy to forget about looking at the world with new eyes, to maintain that hunger and desire to do more. We find comfort in routine and familiarity. As a plastic surgeon, a lot of my work has to do with helping patients reverse or slow down the aging process. We all want to look and feel as good as we did when we were in our 20s. As we age, I think it’s important to look at how our attitudes and values change with every stage, not only the lines and creases on our faces.
I will leave with Morgdriges departing words to the class of 2011.
““Stay hungry. Stay foolish. I’ve always wished that for myself. And now as you set out on your new phase of life, I wish that for you. Congratulations, and good luck.”
Cosmetic Procedures for Father’s Day from the Adams Center - June 7, 2011
With more and more men taking an interest in their appearance and cosmetic surgery, why not do something for the man in your life to get him looking his best? Some of the most popular procedures men opt for are non invasive and can be performed with little to no down time. Here are a few suggestions – including some summer specials – that were sure any man won’t turn down.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botulinum Toxin Type A [Botox] was the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for men in 2010. Botox® works by reducing the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines. The Botox procedure typically takes 15 minutes or less, and benefits typically last 4-8 months.
We’ve got a great deal going on for the month of June called the Botox Referral Program. If you bring Dad or your Man in for their FIRST time injection of Botox – each of you will receive $100 off your injection.
The second most popular minimally invasive procedure for men in 2010, Laser Hair Removal came in at a close second. Men typically opt for laser hair removal on the back and shoulders. These areas are difficult to reach and shaving on a regular basis is tedious and time consuming.
During the month of June, we are running a Laser Hair Removal Special in recognition of Father’s Day! When you book laser hair removal appointments with us during the month of June, we will give you and your spouse 20% off a series of three treatments. Laser Hair Removal is a great investment which will save you time and money in the long run.
This is a great fast procedure for the busy man who thinks he has no time for vanity. A fast procedure that can easily be done on a lunch break, microdermabrasion helps improve the fine lines and wrinkles that creep in around our eyes, mouth and forehead as we age. Using a gentle micro-crystal abrasive, we exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving the skin with a more vibrant, healthy, rejuvenated appearance.
Consultation for Surgical Procedures
Every patient and every cosmetic surgery is different. One of the most important factors for the success of any procedure is taking the time to review your goals and set realistic expectations. Setting up a consultation with Dr. Adams for surgery is a great way to look at your cosmetic goals and set up the correct plan for you personally. Cosmetic surgery can be a life changing decision. If you have made the decision to get cosmetic surgery, we offer several financing options. Some popular procedures for males include Liposuction, Rhinoplasty, Breast Reduction, and Hair Transplantation.

Choosing Plastic Surgery for the Right Reason - May 19, 2011
Choosing to have plastic surgery is a life changing decision. I want to take a moment here to emphasize how important it is to undergo surgery for the right reasons. Recently, there has been a lot of negative media surrounding cosmetic surgery and I want to point out that there are right and wrong reasons to seek out a change in appearance. It’s disheartening to see people seeking out plastic surgery following a divorce in order to “get revenge” on their former spouse. It’s also disappointing to see young people look to cosmetic surgery in order to look like their favorite celebrity or model. The decision to get plastic surgery should not be to fill a void or fix a shortcoming one sees in themselves. It should be a decision made in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and self respecting identity, as I like to say – a whole body approach to beauty. Here are a few reasons I do encourage patients to consider surgery.
Decrease the Signs of Aging
The majority of patients I see for surgery as well as non-surgical procedures come to me to reverse the signs of aging. Thanks to technological advances in the field of cosmetic surgery, we have redefined what old age looks like. I have many patients that come to me with the concern that they don’t look as good as they feel. Many want to improve the tired appearance wrinkles and loss of volume in the face tend to create.
Remove Localized Fat Deposits
As we get older and our metabolism slows, there are certain stubborn areas of fat on our bodies that seem immune to diet and exercise. While liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise, it can help to get rid of localized fat deposits when done in conjunction with a healthy and active lifestyle.
Reverse Effects of Childbirth
In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of the Mommy Make-Over. There are certain negative effects childbirth has on the body that require surgery in order for women to reclaim their pre-baby bodies. Sagging breasts, excess stomach fat, and loose skin are all reasons women seek out plastic surgery following childbirth.

More Men Opting for Plastic Surgery - May 13, 2011
In the past decade, I have noticed a large increase in the number of male patients at my practice. In general, men are beginning to pay more attention to their appearance. According to Men’s Health, the male grooming market is now worth 3.5 billion and rising. Many men who come into my office remark that they don’t look as good as they feel. It’s good to see that attitudes are shifting away from the idea that cosmetic surgery is strictly for women. And not just surgery – skin care too. With the available surgeries and procedures, it’s possible to look fresh and energetic well into your 40′s, 50′s, and even 60′s.
According the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, here are the top 5 cosmetic surgeries for men in 2010:
1. Nose Reshaping [Rhinoplasty]
2. Hair Transplantation
3. Eyelid Surgery [Blepharoplasty]
4. Liposuction
5. Breast Reductions
2010 Top Five Male Cosmetic Minimally-Invasive Procedures
1. Botulinum Toxin Type A [Botox]
2. Laser Hair Removal
3. Microdermabrasion
4. Chemical Peel
5. Soft Tissue Fillers

ASAPS Boston Meeting 20011 Begins Today! - May 6, 2011
Today marks the start of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s 44th annual meeting held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. This year’s theme is Affirming the Science of Aesthetic Surgery with an emphasis on Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM).
Evidence-Based Medicine is a tool that systematically ranks the scientific validity of a study based on 5 levels of evidence and qualifying studies. The purpose of EBM is to improve patient safety, distinguish aesthetic surgery education, and separate all ties to “junk” medicine or science.
The ASAPS annual meeting is one of the foremost events in the field of cosmetic surgery and I am very excited to be attending. I love attending these conferences because it allows me to stay on top the the latest trends and studies. Throughout the week, I will be attending a series of workshops, forums, and exhibits. I am eager to reconnect with old colleagues, meet new people, and soak up lots to share with you all.
Post Pregnancy Plastic Surgery: The Mommy Make-Over - May 4, 2011
There are certain changes that a woman’s body will undergo following pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Although women find pleasure in their new roles as mothers, these changes in physique are generally undesirable.
During the course of pregnancy, the breasts and abdomen stretch, causing the skin to lose elasticity. Moreover, diet and exercise may be ineffective on stubborn areas of fat deposits.
These days more and more women are turning to cosmetic surgery to help them reclaim their pre-baby bodies. A combination of procedures and surgeries are usually necessary for a woman to achieve her pre-pregnancy shape. Although every patient has different needs some popular procedures include:
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
- Breast Augmentation
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
- Liposuction
- Non-Invasive Body Contouring

PLASTIC SURGERY: Frequently Asked Questions - April 22, 2011
1) When can I take a shower?
You can take a shower within 24 hours of most surgeries. After liposuction procedures, you can shower after 48-72 hours. Our rhinoplasty patients can bathe but they need to keep their face dry for a week.
2) Will I have bandages?
For most procedures, bandages will be removed after 24 hours.
Our face lift patients do not have bandages.
3) Can I get the stitches wet?
It is ok to get the stitches wet for most surgeries after 24 hours. It is important however that you follow your post-operative instructions on how to clean the suture line following bathing.
4) When can I have a glass of wine?
You will need to refrain from alcohol consumption until you are off your pain medications, after that time, it is ok to have a glass of wine.
5) When can I exercise?
This really depends upon what surgery you are having. Usually, you will be able to exercise between 1 and 6 weeks following surgery. Walking is always ok following your procedure. For most surgeries, you can return to your pre-surgical exercise regimen after three weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, however, you will need to wait 6 weeks.
6) When can I wear makeup?
After facial surgery, makeup can be worn 7 to 10 days following your procedure.
7) How long will I be bruised?
If you do have bruising, that usually resolves within 1 to 2 weeks.
8. When can I go swimming?
This again, depends upon what surgery you are having. For the most part, you can swim after 3 weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, you will need to wait 6 weeks.
9) When can I have relations after surgery?
If you are not having any discomfort from your surgery you can resume sexual relations. For the most part, this will be after three weeks except if you have had a tummy tuck, in which case it will be after 6 weeks.
10) How long do I wait after my consultation to schedule my surgery?
Once you make the decision that you would like to schedule your surgery, you can do so right away. All you need to do is decide when you would like to have the procedure done and our office will work with you to get your surgery scheduled as close to your chosen date as possible.
11) How much pain will I have after my surgery?
Most patients seem to experience less pain than they expect from their surgeries. We give our patients pain medication that will help to keep them comfortable during their post-operative course.
12) How long will my face lift last?
Environmental factors such as smoking and sun damage play a roll in reducing the longevity of a face lift. In addition, genetic factors play a roll as well. If you are a person who looks good for your stated age, then you will tend to look good for a longer period of time after a face lift.
If you take a pair of identical twins, one has a face lift and the other does not. After ten years, the twin that had the procedure will continue to look better than her sister who did not have the procedure.
13) Will the fat come back after liposuction?
Once fat is removed from an area, it does not come back. Liposuction is not a weight reduction tool; rather, it is used as a contouring tool. If, after your liposuction, you remain at your same weight, your liposuction will be permanent. If, however, you gain weight- all bets are off.
14) What is Juvederm and how long will a Juvederm injection last?
Juvederm is similar to other hyaluronic acid products such as Restyline. Hyaluronic acid is a component of normal skin. It is an injectible filler that is used to fill in wrinkles and hollows. It lasts on the average of 6 months to a year.
14) What is Botox and how long does it last?
Botox is used to relax those muscles that cause frown lines. An example would be the “coma” marks between the eyes that make a person look like they’re scowling. An injection of botox can be effective for 3 to 5 months. It appears that if you routinely get your botox injections, they seem to last longer.
