What Is a Mommy Make-over? - December 6, 2011
Following pregnancy, many women notice unfavorable changes especially in the breast and abdomen areas. The breast and abdomen stretch, causing the skin to lose elasticity. Diet and exercise may be ineffective on stubborn areas of fat deposits. The Mommy Make-Over is an effective way to reverse these changes.
A Mommy Make-over combines cosmetic surgery procedures necessary for a woman to achieve her pre-pregnancy form. These days more and more women are turning to plastic surgery to help them reclaim their pre-baby bodies. Although every woman has different bodies and different needs, some popular procedures included in a Mommy Make-over include:
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy): To correct sagging breasts
- Breast Augmentation
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) To remove excess sagging skin in the abdomen area
- Liposuction: To remove stubborn fat deposits
Dr. William P. Adams is one of greater Boston’s premier Mommy Make-over surgeons. Call now to schedule a consultation and find out more about the Mommy Make-over.

What Is The Best Breast Implant For Me? - June 24, 2011
If you have ever considered breast augmentation, I’m sure you aware there are different types of breast implants available on the market. There are silicone and saline, textured and smooth, thick shelled and thin shelled. Trying to make heads and tails of all of this can be quite confusing. The best breast implant is one that is suited to your needs and lifestyle. During your consultation, we will discuss the type and size of the implant that best fits your needs, lifestyle, and desired outcome.
Saline vs. Silicone
There are two basic kinds of implants. Saline implants have a silicone shell but are filled with a saline solution at the time of surgery. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel – a fluid that is very similar to the consistency of human fat.
Smooth vs. Textured
When it comes to the surface of the implant, there are different variations in texture. I use both smooth and textured implants depending on the situation. I generally opt for textured implants when I am trying to keep an implant in position. I occasionally use textured implants with breast lifts to help support the breast.
Thickness
Although some doctors use implants of varying shell thickness, all of the implants I use are of a consistent thickness.
Adjustable Implants
Although some surgeons will adjust the size of a saline implant up to six months following surgery, this is not something I am comfortable doing. I feel there is an increased risk of leakage with the adjustable implant. I also feel they are not necessary because patients are usually happy with the size selected.
How long do implants generally last?
They are warranted for 10 years but can last much longer than that.
Should women with breast implants have routine MRI’s to check for leaks?
The FDA recommends that women with silicone implants have MRIs every to years to check for leaks. It is not necessary for saline.
I will reiterate, if you are seriously considering breast augmentation, it is best to schedule a consultation so we can formulate a plan to best suit your needs and expectations.

Choosing Plastic Surgery for the Right Reason - May 19, 2011
Choosing to have plastic surgery is a life changing decision. I want to take a moment here to emphasize how important it is to undergo surgery for the right reasons. Recently, there has been a lot of negative media surrounding cosmetic surgery and I want to point out that there are right and wrong reasons to seek out a change in appearance. It’s disheartening to see people seeking out plastic surgery following a divorce in order to “get revenge” on their former spouse. It’s also disappointing to see young people look to cosmetic surgery in order to look like their favorite celebrity or model. The decision to get plastic surgery should not be to fill a void or fix a shortcoming one sees in themselves. It should be a decision made in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and self respecting identity, as I like to say – a whole body approach to beauty. Here are a few reasons I do encourage patients to consider surgery.
Decrease the Signs of Aging
The majority of patients I see for surgery as well as non-surgical procedures come to me to reverse the signs of aging. Thanks to technological advances in the field of cosmetic surgery, we have redefined what old age looks like. I have many patients that come to me with the concern that they don’t look as good as they feel. Many want to improve the tired appearance wrinkles and loss of volume in the face tend to create.
Remove Localized Fat Deposits
As we get older and our metabolism slows, there are certain stubborn areas of fat on our bodies that seem immune to diet and exercise. While liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise, it can help to get rid of localized fat deposits when done in conjunction with a healthy and active lifestyle.
Reverse Effects of Childbirth
In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of the Mommy Make-Over. There are certain negative effects childbirth has on the body that require surgery in order for women to reclaim their pre-baby bodies. Sagging breasts, excess stomach fat, and loose skin are all reasons women seek out plastic surgery following childbirth.

ASAPS Boston Meeting 20011 Begins Today! - May 6, 2011
Today marks the start of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s 44th annual meeting held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. This year’s theme is Affirming the Science of Aesthetic Surgery with an emphasis on Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM).
Evidence-Based Medicine is a tool that systematically ranks the scientific validity of a study based on 5 levels of evidence and qualifying studies. The purpose of EBM is to improve patient safety, distinguish aesthetic surgery education, and separate all ties to “junk” medicine or science.
The ASAPS annual meeting is one of the foremost events in the field of cosmetic surgery and I am very excited to be attending. I love attending these conferences because it allows me to stay on top the the latest trends and studies. Throughout the week, I will be attending a series of workshops, forums, and exhibits. I am eager to reconnect with old colleagues, meet new people, and soak up lots to share with you all.
Post Pregnancy Plastic Surgery: The Mommy Make-Over - May 4, 2011
There are certain changes that a woman’s body will undergo following pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Although women find pleasure in their new roles as mothers, these changes in physique are generally undesirable.
During the course of pregnancy, the breasts and abdomen stretch, causing the skin to lose elasticity. Moreover, diet and exercise may be ineffective on stubborn areas of fat deposits.
These days more and more women are turning to cosmetic surgery to help them reclaim their pre-baby bodies. A combination of procedures and surgeries are usually necessary for a woman to achieve her pre-pregnancy shape. Although every patient has different needs some popular procedures include:
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
- Breast Augmentation
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
- Liposuction
- Non-Invasive Body Contouring

PLASTIC SURGERY: Frequently Asked Questions - April 22, 2011
1) When can I take a shower?
You can take a shower within 24 hours of most surgeries. After liposuction procedures, you can shower after 48-72 hours. Our rhinoplasty patients can bathe but they need to keep their face dry for a week.
2) Will I have bandages?
For most procedures, bandages will be removed after 24 hours.
Our face lift patients do not have bandages.
3) Can I get the stitches wet?
It is ok to get the stitches wet for most surgeries after 24 hours. It is important however that you follow your post-operative instructions on how to clean the suture line following bathing.
4) When can I have a glass of wine?
You will need to refrain from alcohol consumption until you are off your pain medications, after that time, it is ok to have a glass of wine.
5) When can I exercise?
This really depends upon what surgery you are having. Usually, you will be able to exercise between 1 and 6 weeks following surgery. Walking is always ok following your procedure. For most surgeries, you can return to your pre-surgical exercise regimen after three weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, however, you will need to wait 6 weeks.
6) When can I wear makeup?
After facial surgery, makeup can be worn 7 to 10 days following your procedure.
7) How long will I be bruised?
If you do have bruising, that usually resolves within 1 to 2 weeks.
8. When can I go swimming?
This again, depends upon what surgery you are having. For the most part, you can swim after 3 weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, you will need to wait 6 weeks.
9) When can I have relations after surgery?
If you are not having any discomfort from your surgery you can resume sexual relations. For the most part, this will be after three weeks except if you have had a tummy tuck, in which case it will be after 6 weeks.
10) How long do I wait after my consultation to schedule my surgery?
Once you make the decision that you would like to schedule your surgery, you can do so right away. All you need to do is decide when you would like to have the procedure done and our office will work with you to get your surgery scheduled as close to your chosen date as possible.
11) How much pain will I have after my surgery?
Most patients seem to experience less pain than they expect from their surgeries. We give our patients pain medication that will help to keep them comfortable during their post-operative course.
12) How long will my face lift last?
Environmental factors such as smoking and sun damage play a roll in reducing the longevity of a face lift. In addition, genetic factors play a roll as well. If you are a person who looks good for your stated age, then you will tend to look good for a longer period of time after a face lift.
If you take a pair of identical twins, one has a face lift and the other does not. After ten years, the twin that had the procedure will continue to look better than her sister who did not have the procedure.
13) Will the fat come back after liposuction?
Once fat is removed from an area, it does not come back. Liposuction is not a weight reduction tool; rather, it is used as a contouring tool. If, after your liposuction, you remain at your same weight, your liposuction will be permanent. If, however, you gain weight- all bets are off.
14) What is Juvederm and how long will a Juvederm injection last?
Juvederm is similar to other hyaluronic acid products such as Restyline. Hyaluronic acid is a component of normal skin. It is an injectible filler that is used to fill in wrinkles and hollows. It lasts on the average of 6 months to a year.
14) What is Botox and how long does it last?
Botox is used to relax those muscles that cause frown lines. An example would be the “coma” marks between the eyes that make a person look like they’re scowling. An injection of botox can be effective for 3 to 5 months. It appears that if you routinely get your botox injections, they seem to last longer.
The Low-Down on Cellulite Removal: SmoothShapes and Velashapes - April 15, 2011
As the temperatures begin to rise here in New England, our thoughts begin to drift towards the summer time and long days at the beach or by the pool. But many of us also begin to experience a little bit of anxiety at the thought of having wear a bathing suit after the long winter months. One main reason is cellulite. Millions of men and women are in an ongoing battle with cellulite on their thighs, buttocks, love handles, and abdomen. Luckily, there are now procedures available to help you win this battle. SmoothShapes and VelaShapes are two new procedures that the Adams Center offers for cellulite removal. I want to explain how these procedures work and why they are effective.
What is cellulite and why do I have it?
Cellulite is lumpy, dimpled skin that is usually found on the thighs, buttocks, love handles, and abdomen. When fat cells grow too large for the fibrous tissue that surrounds them, the rigid fibers bulge into the soft tissue of the dermis. This causes that lumpy “cottage cheese” appearance of the skin. The underlying biological causes are edema, poor blood circulation, and decreased metabolism. However, there are many factors that contribute to who gets cellulite and why. Cellulite can result from an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise but it also can be attributed to genetics and hormones. And smoking cigarettes can make it worse. Men and women can have cellulite regardless of their weight or size and exercise alone is rarely effective in controlling it.
How do I get rid of cellulite?
Essentially, the excess fat inside of the fibrous tissue chambers needs to be broken down and metabolized by the body. Despite what many people think, liposuction does not remove cellulite. SmoothShapes and Velashapes are two new breakthrough’s in the treatment of cellulite.
What is SmoothShapes? How does it work?
SmoothShapes was developed by Eleme Medical and it uses a technology called Photomology. It works by combining laser and light energy with contoured rollers and vacuum mechanism. SmoothShapes applies heat and pressure to the skin that releases the fibrous tissue and helps to smooth out fat cells. It also stimulates collagen production and natural metabolic processes, treating two culprits of cellulite – edema and poor blood circulation.
What is VelaShape? How does it work?
VelaShape was developed by Syneron and utilizes elos technology. Bi-polar radio frequency (RF) and infrared light energy are combined with vacuum and mechanical massage rollers to smooth out cellulite. VelaShape stimulates the metabolism of the fat cells, stimulates lymphatic drainage, and reduces the size of fat cells and fat chambers. It has been approved for cellulite reduction as well as circumferential reduction around the thighs.
SmoothShapes and VelaShapes Procedures at the Adams Center
My favorite part about these new procedures is that they require zero downtime. Treatment time is short – generally only 20 minutes and I find it to be quite enjoyable. I compare the sensation to a deep tissue massage with a slight warming of the skin. This is a procedure you can schedule during a lunch break or before you pick the kids up from school. Typically, at least four or five treatments are recommended, although some patients see noticeable results after just one treatment. We offer special packages on a series of 6 or more treatments.
During the month of April we are offering 25% off Smoothshapes and Velashapes, a great incentive to try out these new procedures just in time for summer!
What about Mesotherapy ?
Mesotherapy is an injectable that is designed to break down fat, promote circulation, and increase metabolic activity. As of yet, it has not been approved which is why we do not offer it.
Lipomassage is a technology by Endermoogie that works through cell stimulation to reactivate metabolic activity by stimulating the skin.
