Cosmetic Procedures for Father’s Day from the Adams Center - June 7, 2011

Cosmetic Procedures for Father's Day

Father's Day is Just Around the Corner - are you ready?

With more and more men taking an interest in their appearance and cosmetic surgery, why not do something for the man in your life to get him looking his best? Some of the most popular procedures men opt for are non invasive and can be performed with little to no down time. Here are a few suggestions – including some summer specials – that were sure any man won’t turn down.

Botox

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botulinum Toxin Type A [Botox] was the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for men in 2010. Botox® works by reducing the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines. The Botox procedure typically takes 15 minutes or less, and benefits typically last 4-8 months.

We’ve got a great deal going on for the month of June called the Botox Referral Program. If you bring Dad or your Man in for their FIRST time injection of Botox – each of you will receive $100 off your injection.

Laser Hair Removal

The second most popular minimally invasive procedure for men in 2010, Laser Hair Removal came in at a close second.  Men typically opt for laser hair removal on the back and shoulders. These areas are difficult to reach and shaving on a regular basis is tedious and time consuming.

During the month of June, we are running a Laser Hair Removal Special in recognition of Father’s Day!   When you book  laser hair removal appointments with us during the month of June, we will give you and your spouse 20% off a series of three treatments. Laser Hair Removal is a great investment which will save you time and money in the long run.

Microdermabrasion

This is a great fast procedure for the busy man who thinks he has no time for vanity.  A fast procedure that can easily be done on a lunch break, microdermabrasion helps improve the fine lines and wrinkles that creep in around our eyes, mouth and forehead as we age.  Using a gentle micro-crystal abrasive, we exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving the skin with a more vibrant, healthy, rejuvenated appearance.

Consultation for Surgical Procedures

Every patient and every cosmetic surgery is different.  One of the most important factors for the success of  any procedure is taking the time to review your goals and set realistic expectations.  Setting up a consultation with Dr. Adams for surgery is a great way to look at your cosmetic goals and set up the correct plan for you personally.  Cosmetic surgery can be a life changing decision. If you have made the decision to get cosmetic surgery, we offer several financing options.  Some popular procedures for males include Liposuction, Rhinoplasty, Breast Reduction, and Hair Transplantation.

Choosing Plastic Surgery for the Right Reason - May 19, 2011

Plastic Surgery for the Right Reasons

Nude in Blue Artist: Farhad Rafizadeh, MD

Choosing to have plastic surgery  is a life changing decision.  I want to take a moment here to emphasize how important it is to undergo surgery for the right reasons.  Recently, there has been a lot of negative media surrounding cosmetic surgery and I want to point out  that there are right and wrong reasons to seek out a change in appearance.  It’s disheartening to see people seeking out plastic surgery following a divorce in order to “get revenge” on their former spouse.  It’s also disappointing to see young people look to cosmetic surgery in order to look like their favorite celebrity or model.  The decision to get plastic surgery should not be to fill a void or fix a shortcoming one sees in themselves.  It should be a decision made in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and  self respecting identity, as I like to say – a whole body approach to beauty.  Here are a few reasons I do encourage patients to consider surgery.

Decrease the Signs of Aging

The majority of patients I see for surgery as well as non-surgical procedures come to me to reverse the signs of aging.  Thanks to technological advances in the field of cosmetic surgery, we have redefined what old age looks like.  I have many patients that come to me with the concern that they don’t look as good as they feel.  Many want to improve the tired appearance wrinkles and loss of volume in the face tend to create.

Remove Localized Fat Deposits

As we get older and our metabolism slows, there are certain stubborn areas of fat on our bodies that seem immune to diet and exercise.  While liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise, it can help to get rid of localized fat deposits when done in conjunction with a healthy and active lifestyle.

Reverse Effects of Childbirth

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of the Mommy Make-Over.  There are certain negative effects childbirth has on the body that require surgery in order for women to reclaim their pre-baby bodies.  Sagging breasts, excess stomach fat, and loose skin are all reasons women seek out plastic surgery following childbirth.

More Men Opting for Plastic Surgery - May 13, 2011

Male Plastic Surgery

In the past decade, I have noticed a large increase in the number of male patients at my practice. In general, men are beginning to pay more attention to their appearance. According to Men’s Health, the male grooming market is now worth 3.5 billion and rising. Many men who come into my office remark that they don’t look as good as they feel. It’s good to see that attitudes are shifting away from the idea that cosmetic surgery is strictly for women. And not just surgery – skin care too. With the available surgeries and procedures, it’s possible to look fresh and energetic well into your 40′s, 50′s, and even 60′s.

According the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, here are the top 5 cosmetic surgeries for men in 2010:

1. Nose Reshaping [Rhinoplasty]
2. Hair Transplantation
3. Eyelid Surgery [Blepharoplasty]
4. Liposuction
5. Breast Reductions

2010 Top Five Male Cosmetic Minimally-Invasive Procedures

1. Botulinum Toxin Type A [Botox]
2. Laser Hair Removal
3. Microdermabrasion
4. Chemical Peel
5. Soft Tissue Fillers

ASAPS Boston Meeting 20011 Begins Today! - May 6, 2011

ASAPS Boston Meeting 2011

ASAPS Boston Meeting 2011 May 6-11 at the Boston Convention Center

Today marks the start of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s 44th annual meeting held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. This year’s theme is Affirming the Science of Aesthetic Surgery with an emphasis on Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM).

Evidence-Based Medicine is a tool that systematically ranks the scientific validity of a study based on 5 levels of evidence and qualifying studies. The purpose of EBM is to improve patient safety, distinguish aesthetic surgery education, and separate all ties to “junk” medicine or science.

The ASAPS annual meeting is one of the foremost events in the field of cosmetic surgery and I am very excited to be attending.  I love attending these conferences because it allows me to stay on top the the latest trends and studies.  Throughout the week, I will be attending a series of workshops, forums, and exhibits.  I am eager to reconnect with old colleagues, meet new people, and soak up lots to share with you all.

Post Pregnancy Plastic Surgery: The Mommy Make-Over - May 4, 2011

Mommy Make-Over

The Mommy-Make Over

There are certain changes that a woman’s body will undergo following pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Although women find pleasure in their new roles as mothers, these changes in physique are generally undesirable.
During the course of pregnancy, the breasts and abdomen stretch, causing the skin to lose elasticity. Moreover, diet and exercise may be ineffective on stubborn areas of fat deposits.

These days more and more women are turning to cosmetic surgery to help them reclaim their pre-baby bodies. A combination of procedures and surgeries are usually necessary for a woman to achieve her pre-pregnancy shape. Although every patient has different needs some popular procedures include:

- Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
- Breast Augmentation
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
- Liposuction
- Non-Invasive Body Contouring

PLASTIC SURGERY: Frequently Asked Questions - April 22, 2011

1) When can I take a shower?

You can take a shower within 24 hours of most surgeries. After liposuction procedures, you can shower after 48-72 hours. Our rhinoplasty patients can bathe but they need to keep their face dry for a week.

2) Will I have bandages?

For most procedures, bandages will be removed after 24 hours.
Our face lift patients do not have bandages.

3) Can I get the stitches wet?

It is ok to get the stitches wet for most surgeries after 24 hours. It is important however that you follow your post-operative instructions on how to clean the suture line following bathing.

4) When can I have a glass of wine?

You will need to refrain from alcohol consumption until you are off your pain medications, after that time, it is ok to have a glass of wine.

5) When can I exercise?

This really depends upon what surgery you are having. Usually, you will be able to exercise between 1 and 6 weeks following surgery. Walking is always ok following your procedure. For most surgeries, you can return to your pre-surgical exercise regimen after three weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, however, you will need to wait 6 weeks.

6) When can I wear makeup?

After facial surgery, makeup can be worn 7 to 10 days following your procedure.

7) How long will I be bruised?

If you do have bruising, that usually resolves within 1 to 2 weeks.

8. When can I go swimming?

This again, depends upon what surgery you are having. For the most part, you can swim after 3 weeks. If you have had a tummy tuck, you will need to wait 6 weeks.

9) When can I have relations after surgery?

If you are not having any discomfort from your surgery you can resume sexual relations. For the most part, this will be after three weeks except if you have had a tummy tuck, in which case it will be after 6 weeks.

10) How long do I wait after my consultation to schedule my surgery?

Once you make the decision that you would like to schedule your surgery, you can do so right away. All you need to do is decide when you would like to have the procedure done and our office will work with you to get your surgery scheduled as close to your chosen date as possible.

11) How much pain will I have after my surgery?

Most patients seem to experience less pain than they expect from their surgeries. We give our patients pain medication that will help to keep them comfortable during their post-operative course.

12) How long will my face lift last?

Environmental factors such as smoking and sun damage play a roll in reducing the longevity of a face lift. In addition, genetic factors play a roll as well. If you are a person who looks good for your stated age, then you will tend to look good for a longer period of time after a face lift.

If you take a pair of identical twins, one has a face lift and the other does not. After ten years, the twin that had the procedure will continue to look better than her sister who did not have the procedure.

13) Will the fat come back after liposuction?

Once fat is removed from an area, it does not come back. Liposuction is not a weight reduction tool; rather, it is used as a contouring tool. If, after your liposuction, you remain at your same weight, your liposuction will be permanent. If, however, you gain weight- all bets are off.

14) What is Juvederm and how long will a Juvederm injection last?

Juvederm is similar to other hyaluronic acid products such as Restyline. Hyaluronic acid is a component of normal skin. It is an injectible filler that is used to fill in wrinkles and hollows. It lasts on the average of 6 months to a year.

14) What is Botox and how long does it last?

Botox is used to relax those muscles that cause frown lines. An example would be the “coma” marks between the eyes that make a person look like they’re scowling. An injection of botox can be effective for 3 to 5 months. It appears that if you routinely get your botox injections, they seem to last longer.

Patients Lose Up to 15 Inches from Waist with FDA Approved Zerona - September 30, 2010

The Federal Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent approval of Zerona opens the doors to a whole new world for those of us with a few stubborn areas of fat to lose. There have been several breakthroughs in non-surgical body sculpting for both cellulite reduction and fat reduction recently. The new Zerona™ system from ERCHONIA®, just cleared by the FDA, is one of the most promising.

My typical body contouring patient is someone who has stubborn areas of fat that they can’t get rid of, no matter how much exercise they do. Patients often come to me after trying various exercise programs that include biking, running, weights, etc. These pockets of excess body fat are actually one of the most difficult body issues to correct, and exercise alone often doesn’t work.

Zerona is leaps and bounds ahead of many of the other non-surgical body contouring or liposuction procedures. There are several laser, and other non-surgical products that claim results that, in my experience, aren’t accurate.

Zerona has been used for a couple of years to help break up fat cells prior to a traditional liposuction. However, plastic surgeons have recently begun using Zerona on its own to perform body contouring – no surgery required. Clinical testing of Zerona as a stand-alone procedure have shown that patients treated with the system lost from 3-4 inches; however, some of my patients have lost 12 or more inches.

Donna, a recent Zerona patient, lost an amazing 12 and a half inches. “I’ve always taken care of myself. Watched what I ate, and exercised. I walk five miles a day, but even with that, I still had some areas of fat that I couldn’t get rid of. I’d heard of Zerona, and saw that The Adams Center was one of the few plastic surgeons in the area that offered it. I went through the six treatment sessions in two weeks, and the rest is history.”

Zerona utilizes a low frequency laser scanner to help liquefy fatty tissue under the skin, which then gets passed through the body during the detoxification process. Treatment takes 40 minutes and needs to be administered three times a week over a two week period for best results. Because Zerona uses a low level laser, it produces no heat, making it a very comfortable procedure without interruptions from surgery, pain, wounds or compression garments.

“The Zerona procedure was actually very pleasant,” said Laura, another Zerona patient. “I’ve always exercised. Done kickboxing and weight training for a number of years, and I walk several miles a day. But, I still had areas that I wanted to shape to help boost my results from the exercise. I went through the Zerona treatments, and by the end of the two weeks, found I had lost 15 inches. The Adams Center’s staff and atmosphere made the experience even better. Zerona was terrific, start to finish!”

Right now, Zerona is by far the best non-surgical body contouring treatment available. The rapid developments in effective non-surgical procedures to do things that used to require a surgical procedure have been amazing. The Adams Center applauds the FDA’s approval of this effective, non-surgical body contouring method.

Laser Cellulite Removal & Body Contouring - August 28, 2009

SmoothShapes represents a significant breakthrough in how quickly and easily cellulite can be treated!

Cellulite, which is often described as looking like “cottage cheese,” is a common issue that affects millions of women and men. It is often found on the backs of the thighs, or buttocks. The underlying causes of cellulite include edema, impaired blood circulation and decreased metabolism.

My typical patient has a pretty high fitness level. We’re not talking about people who have let themselves go for years, and all of a sudden want the latest ‘quick fix.’ Patients often come to me after trying various exercise programs, biking, running, weights, etc. Cellulite is one of the most difficult body issues to fix, and exercise alone is rarely an effective control measure.

Elemé Medical developed SmoothShapes based on their proprietary technology known as “Photomology.” The Photomology process works by combining laser and light energy with contoured rollers and a vacuum system to reduce the appearance of cellulite. SmoothShapes remodels your body’s natural collagen to help smooth and tighten the skin long-term.

The SmoothShapes procedure is actually very pleasant. It feels like a deep tissue massage with a slight warming to the skin. Best of all, there’s no downtime. While some patients see an improvement after one treatment, 6 or 8 treatments are usually recommended.

Another non-surgical procedure that shows promise in body-contouring is Zerona, by Erchonia. Zerona utilizes a low frequency laser scanner to help liquefy fatty tissue under the skin, which then gets passed through the body during the detoxification process. This laser device has been used for years to help break up fat cells prior to a traditional Liposuction.

I’ve recently begun using Zerona on its own to perform body contouring – no surgery required. Clinical testing of Zerona as a stand-alone procedure has shown that patients treated with the system averaged a loss of 3-4 inches, with some losing as much as 9 inches. Additionally, Zerona uses a low level laser that produces no heat, making this a comfortable procedure for patients with no down time.

I like to combine procedures to produce maximum results for my patients. SmoothShapes is a great procedure to combine with either Zerona non-surgical body-sculpting procedure, or a traditional Liposuction for an overall lower body reshaping.

The rapid developments in effective non-surgical procedures to do things that used to require a surgical procedure have been amazing.
