The summertime is a time for fun and socializing here in New England, but it can also be a time when we let our good habits slip. Here are some things to keep in mind as we head outdoors to weekend bbq’s and days lounging at the beach. If you keep in mind the following five tips below, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself and not take a toll on your appearance!
1. Don’t smoke
The #1 thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking if you are a current smoker. This will lower your blood pressure and your risk of heart disease, as well as the chance you will have a stroke and your risk of some cancers.
2. Stay active
Try and get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. This can be as much as just simply going for a walk outdoors, or walking on a treadmill. The goal is to get your heart rate up for that period of time. If you have questions about appropriate levels of activity for your age and relative health, you should talk with your general care practitioner. Most importantly, it should be an activity you enjoy!
3. Limit alcohol use
I recommend limiting yourself to one drink per day, unless it’s a special occasion.
4. Eat a healthy diet
Incorporate a lot of fruits and vegetables into your diet. Try to eat a rainbow of colors every day. If you can, try to eat fish for dinner twice per week. Cut back on extra sugar and saturated fats.
5. Watch your waistline
We all know that being overweight can be harmful to your health, but so can be underweight. Talk with your general care practitioner about what is a healthy weight range for you. Although liposuction can help eliminate stubborn areas of fat, it is not a solution for overweight individuals who are not taking care of their health.
